How to Choose the Right Online Music Teacher for Your Child: A Parent's Checklist
· UniEDD
A great teacher can make a child fall in love with music; the wrong one can put them off for years. With so many online options, how do you choose? Use this checklist before you commit.

The checklist
- Live and one-to-one: your child gets the teacher's full attention and instant feedback.
- Experience with children: teaching a seven-year-old is very different from teaching an adult.
- A free trial or demo class: a confident teacher is happy for you to see them in action first.
- A clear plan: the teacher can explain what your child will learn in the next few months.
- Flexible timing: lessons that fit school, activities and your time zone.
- Regular feedback: you hear how your child is doing, not just "fine".
- Fun as well as structure: songs your child enjoys alongside the basics.
- Reliable technology: lessons start on time and the video and audio work.
Questions to ask in the demo class
- How do you keep young children engaged in an online lesson?
- What should my child practise between lessons, and for how long?
- How will we know they are making progress?
- What happens if my child struggles with a piece or loses motivation?
- Can lessons be rescheduled if we have a clash?
Red flags to watch out for
- No trial lesson, or pressure to pay for a long package immediately.
- Group "live" classes where your child is one face among many.
- Teachers who never correct posture or hand position.
- No clear answer about what your child will learn.
- Frequent cancellations or late starts.

Watch your child, not just the teacher
During the demo, notice how your child reacts. Are they smiling, asking questions, keen to show you what they learned afterwards? The right teacher-student match matters more than any certificate.
